Bun's Rewrite in Rust Is More Than a Technical Decision. It May Mark the Beginning of AI-Native Software Engineering
A few weeks ago, after Bun announced its decision to completely rewrite the project in Rust, coinciding with Anthropic's acquisition of the team behind Claude Code, I had a strong feeling that we were witnessing something much larger than a programming language migration.
This could become one of the defining milestones in modern software engineering.
Historically, complete rewrites have been viewed with skepticism. Entire products have been rebuilt for scalability, maintainability, or architectural improvements, but the industry is filled with cautionary tales. Joel Spolsky's famous essay Things You Should Never Do, Part I shaped an entire generation of engineers to avoid rewriting successful software from scratch.
What makes Bun different is not simply that it is attempting a complete rewrite of a critical piece of developer infrastructure.
It's who is helping perform the rewrite.
The First AI-Native Rewrite?
Bun isn't just another open-source project.
It has become one of the fastest-rising JavaScript runtimes in decades, challenging assumptions that Node.js had cemented for over fifteen years. It powers production workloads, has an enormous developer community, and sits at the foundation of thousands of applications.
Completely rewriting a project of this scale has traditionally required years of engineering effort, extensive planning, and enormous business risk.
Today, for perhaps the first time, AI is no longer generating snippets of code or acting only as an autocomplete assistant. It is becoming an active participant in one of the most ambitious full-scale software rewrites ever attempted by a modern infrastructure project.
If this succeeds, the story won't simply be, "Bun was rewritten in Rust."
The story will be:
A widely adopted software runtime was completely rewritten with AI acting as a genuine engineering multiplier.
That would be unprecedented.
